Witkoff says dialogues on resolution on Ukraine are “at the end”

(MENAFN) US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said on Thursday that discussions aimed at reaching a settlement in Ukraine are entering their final phase. Speaking at an event in Davos, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, he described the talks as “at the end now” and expressed optimism about their outcome.

Witkoff noted that significant progress has been achieved in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. He praised the Ukrainian delegation for their efforts, saying he spent “a lot of time together” with the team since discussions in Geneva last November. “I think we’ve got it down to one issue, and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable. So if both sides want to solve this, we’re going to get it solved,” he said.

Witkoff also announced that he and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, would travel to Moscow Thursday evening for talks and then continue to Abu Dhabi for further working group meetings without staying overnight. In Moscow, they are scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier, Witkoff told reporters that the Kremlin had requested the Moscow talks, and he expressed hope that “something good” could be announced soon. Both Witkoff and Kushner have engaged in multiple meetings with Russian officials and Ukrainian representatives as part of efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which is approaching its fifth year.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin’s meeting with the US envoys is scheduled for after 7–8 p.m. local time, after which Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov will brief journalists on the outcomes. Peskov added, “We would not like to comment on the current stage of the negotiations, especially in the run-up to Witkoff's arrival in Moscow and his meeting with Putin.”
