German AfD Calls for New Diplomatic Approach to Ukraine War
AfD co-chairman Tino Chrupalla said Monday that German voters were looking for a different direction on peace and diplomacy. He called on Merz to travel to Moscow and hold talks aimed at reducing tensions and reversing what he described as an ongoing cycle of escalation and arms competition.
Germans want "to see a different kind of policy here, including a different approach to peace and diplomacy. They want Friedrich Merz to finally travel to Moscow and hold talks there, so that the spiral of escalation, and the arms race, can finally be broken," Chrupalla said during a media briefing in Berlin.
He also advocated maintaining constructive relations with major global powers, including the United States and China, while criticizing Germany’s sanctions policy toward Russia.
“We want good cooperation with all major powers, with America and China alike. The sanctions policy (against Russia) has primarily harmed the German economy,” he added.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel similarly called for renewed communication with Moscow, saying that dialogue involving both Russia and the United States was important to the party.
“it is important to us to open up a channel of communication with the Russian side, together with the Americans,” she said.
Weidel further claimed that both Russia and the United States viewed the AfD as Germany’s only dependable political partner.
“Both sides have concluded that the AfD is the only remaining reliable partner in Germany,” she added.
The statements came after the AfD secured victory in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election, marking its second state-level win within two weeks. Preliminary results also showed that Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) recorded its weakest performance in the party’s 81-year history.
