Witkoff Takes Updated Ukraine Peace Plan to Putin Wednesday
The official said Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, will take part in the meeting virtually.
The Kremlin meeting follows Witkoff’s talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the Trump administration presses its diplomatic push to end the conflict.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store confirmed Tuesday that Witkoff will travel to St. Petersburg to brief Russia’s leadership on ideas that emerged from discussions with Ukrainian and Nordic leaders in Norway.
At a news conference in Oslo with Zelenskyy and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Store said Witkoff would trade views on proposals drawn up by European and US officials, a step that could open the way to a leaders-level meeting. Store called the Norway talks “good and constructive,” and stressed the need for sustained cooperation to move diplomacy toward an end to the war.
Separately, Trump said Tuesday that the European Union is growing “tired of spending” money on Ukraine, and he pressed Zelenskyy to strike a deal with Russia.
Asked whether the peace process was back on track after the Oslo talks, Trump replied: “I think what’s happening is that Russia would like to get it done.”
“Russia is a big machine. They just keep grinding forward,” he said. “They have an unlimited supply of people.”
